I believe as educators it is our responsibility to equip our students with the skills needed to gain knowledge and success. It is our duty to instill in students the ability to think for themselves and excite them to be proactive in their learning. We must act as a conduit for information by providing an environment in which students learn to find answers to their own questions as opposed to providing answers for them.

I emphasize my instruction on facilitating learning as opposed to simply delivering material. When I began my career as an instructor I followed suit to the instructors I had when I was a student by focusing class time on PowerPoint lectures.  I quickly realized that the lectures alone do not effectively capitalize on the greatest resource that a classroom setting provides – the thoughts, knowledge and experience of fellow students.  I now focus classroom time on interactive activities, discussions and debates which not only present all sides of the topic, but also challenge students to practically apply the knowledge gained through their text.  I have also found that the use of case studies helps students learn to diagnose and solve actual business issues.  This aids in keeping the course interesting, relevant and in preparing students for “real life” business situations.

I believe that a good educational experience is a rigorous one.   I believe we do our students a great disservice by overlooking poor writing, under-developed analytical skills and the inability to apply critically thinking skills.  We must set the bar high and challenge students to succeed. I have been labeled as “strict, but fair” and I concur.  I expect students to come to class prepared and to contribute meaningfully.
