Dr. Nancy Watkins is a professor in the College of Education at St. Petersburg College. She earned her Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Florida International University (Miami) in 2004 and her Master's in Elementary Education from Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton) in 1993. Prior to joining the faculty at St. Petersburg College, Dr. Watkins taught for 12 years in Title 1 elementary schools (grades 1 through 5) across Broward, Miami-Dade, and Pinellas Counties. In 2014, Dr. Watkins was honored with the "Distinguished Faculty Award" from St. Petersburg College.
Dr. Watkins is actively involved in a wide range of projects related to literacy and critical thinking, classroom management, and digital media in education. With 25 years of experience in literacy education, she has published district curriculum for structured Balanced Literacy and has received numerous grants to fund literacy projects in high-needs areas. Dr. Watkins continues to collaborate with Dr. Biggs on the 11th year of Ready, Set, Read, a summer tutoring program for at-risk readers in the Tampa Bay area. This program has supported over 2,000 students, preventing summer reading loss while improving reading achievement and engagement.
In addition to her academic work, Dr. Watkins serves as a Guardian ad Litem, volunteering with the Hero to a Child Organization to advocate for abused, abandoned, and neglected children in Pinellas County.
