Dr. Nancy Watkins is a professor in the College of Education at St. Petersburg College.  She received her Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Florida International University (Miami) in 2004 and her Master's in Elementary Education from Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton) 1993.  Prior to joining the faculty at St. Petersburg College, Dr. Watkins spent 12 years teaching in Title 1 elementary schools (grades first through fifth) in Broward, Miami-Dade and Pinellas Counties.  Dr. Watkins was proud to receive the "Distinguished Faculty Award" from St. Petersburg College in 2014.  

Dr. Watkins is involved in a wide range of projects related to literacy and critical thinking, classroom management and digital media in education.  Dr. Watkins has been involved the theory and practice of literacy education for 25 years.  She has published district curriculum for structured Balanced Literacy, received numerous grants for funding literacy projects in high needs areas and continues to work with Dr. Biggs on the 11th year of Ready, Set Read, a summer tutoring project for at-risk readers in the Tampa Bay area.  This program has served over 2000 students in not only preventing summer reading loss, but also improving reading achievement and engagement.  Dr. Watkins is currently a Guardian ad Litem volunteering for abused, abandoned and neglected children in Pinellas County through the Hero to a Child Organization.
