I discovered the rewards of teaching following service in the United States Navy nuclear submarine force, and careers in the commercial nuclear power and insurance industries. Every job I have ever had made extensive use of Mathematics, and I encourage you to investigate some of the many careers in which Math plays a vital part.
My goal is to make Math as interesting, challenging, understandable, and realistic as possible. The fun will come with practice. This means I am a strong believer in frequent and regular homework assignments, which I think are necessary to reinforce concepts learned in class. These will also help you prepare for tests, the only true measure of how well you have mastered the material.
During class, I attempt wherever possible to relate what we are working on to real-life applications. I also will let you know the courses (Chemistry, Physics, Economics, etc...) in which you might see that particular Math topic again.
I hope you won't hesitate to stop by my office during office hours at least once this semester. Many things can be cleared up with a short discussion.
I wish you good luck in your studies, wherever they make take you.
