Dr. Meya Hemphill-Hodges

Educational Background: Dr. Hemphill-Hodges holds a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology, a Master of Arts in American Studies, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Applied Anthropology. With a strong interdisciplinary foundation, Dr. Hemphill-Hodges has dedicated her career to exploring the intricate tapestry of human cutlures and histories.
Teaching Philosophy: Through thought-provoking discussions, close readings, and creative assignments, I encourage my students to develop critical thinking, cultivate a passion for the arts and culture, and expand their worldview. I am especially passionate about creating a space where students feel supported and encouraged to thrive. By fostering a sense of community and mutual respect, I hope to empower my students to become active participants in their learning, to see the value in their experience, and to recognize the strength that comes from both our differences and our shared humanity. Research and Focus Areas: Dr. Hemphill-Hodges research interests are diverse and deeply rooted in the study of African and African Diaspora culture and history. Her work delves into the rich cultural heritage and historical experirences of African communities across the globe. Additionally, Dr. Hemphill-Hodges has extensively studied gender and media representation, examining how media shapes and reflects societal norms and identities. Another significant area of her research is military culture and history, where she explores the social and cultural dimensions of military life, particularly for female Veterans and their families.
Hobbies and Interests: Outside of academia, Dr. Hemphill-Hodges enjoys a variety of hobbies that reflect her dynamic personality. She practices yoga and martial arts. In her leisure time, she loves crafting and photography, creative outlets that allow for relaxation and artistic expression. She is an avid gamer, finding joy playing on PC, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox. Reading is a passion of hers as well. Most importantly, Dr. Hemphill-Hodges cherishes moments spent with loved ones, sharing a cup of tea and a sweet treat. Fostering connections and creating lasting memories are important for her.
