Dr. Andres M. Cardenas-Valencia received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering (minor in math and polymer science) and an M.S. in engineering from the University of South Florida. His dissertation dealt with the mathematical modeling of multiple scattering aimed at colloid characterization for industrial and biomedical sensing applications. His B.S. in Chemical Engineering is from the University of Guadalajara with electives in instrumentation and control, and specialization on novel materials.
Since graduating, and for 15+ years, Dr. Cardenas-Valencia has worked for the Center for Ocean Technology from the University of South Florida and SRI International (formerly Stanford Research institute) as a Sr. Research and Development Engineer, where he cowrote and executed on proposals, most of which where federally funded by agencies like DoE, DoD, NASA and NSF. His work on development projects have encompassed signal processing; optical sensors, including spectrophotometric and scattering ones (e.g., determination of optical properties, colloidal and particle dispersion analysis, and chemical characterization of fluids); power sources (e.g. water-activated batteries, semi-fuel cells, and microbial fuel cells) for underwater environments; and underwater mass spectrometry and Raman electromechanical interfaces for harsh environments (ocean and space).  He has about 20 peer-reviewed publications, about a hundred proceeding publications, and 18 US patent granted in the aforementioned topics and on microelectromechanical systems.
Dr. Cardenas-Valencia currently works at Connectsix LLC, a small local company focuses on the Internet of Things sensing devices. There, as a Principal Engineer, he applies his expertise to perform contractual research and development in sensor systems and increasing security and safety of individuals.. Dr. Cardenas enjoys spending time and traveling with his family, jogging, going to the gym, and practicing Sohotokan Karate (black belt).
