Pianist Xu Hui delighted Tallahassee audiences in the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra’s 2008-09 season with two sold-out performances of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Hui has concertized in numerous countries, including the U.S., Russia, Ukraine,
Moldova, Lithuania and China. In 2010, she performed in New York’s Carnegie Hall —a milestone in her performance career.
Xu Hui was born in Shenyang, China. At 12, she was accepted into Shenyang Conservatory of Music’s pre-college division. She studied under I. I. Suhomlinov, a disciple of legendary pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus, at Odessa Conservatory in Ukraine, where she achieved the conservatory’s highest honor and also completed her master’s degree. In 2010, Xu Hui received her Doctor of Music in Piano Performance from Florida State University.
In the U.S., she has won the Gold Medal in FSU’s Concerto Competition, first prize in the Willa Chapman Piano Competition, Indiana’s Ball State University Concerto Competition, and fourth prize in the International Piano Competition in Washington, D.C. Hui also has performed at national music festivals and orchestras abroad, including with the Odessa Music Academy Orchestra in Ukraine and Indiana Ball State Symphony Orchestra. Her performances have been broadcast over both television and radio in China, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine and the U.S.
In February 2012, she joined the Florida Orchestra as a concert pianist. Hui serves as a music faculty member at St. Petersburg College and a member of the Music Teachers National Association. She also has served as faculty at FSU’s Summer Music Camp and as a judge for the university’s Music Teachers District I Concerto Competition. Her private students have received competition prizes in the U.S. and China.
