I have a broad background in community college's both as a student and instructor of geology and earth science. Much of my passion for geology came from the 14 years I spent living in the Rocky Mountain West. I completed both my bachelor and master's degree at Colorado State University and spent a number of years employed in the oil and gas industry. With the decline in the petroleum industry in the mid 1980's I came to Florida.
I began my teaching in higher at Broward College, where I revitalized the geology program, served on a variety of environmental education grants, developed an AS degree program in Environmental Science and Technology and also served as natural science department chairperson. This position was packed full of wonderful experiences working with students and faculty both in and out of the classroom.
In the mid 90's my family moved to Pinellas County where I worked a variety of geology related jobs including adjunct instruction at St. Petersburg College. I left the area for a few years to help start at a brand new community college in Klamath Falls and instruct at Pensacola State College.
Over the summer of 2010 after a trip collecting rocks throughout the southwest and hiking the Grand Canyon I returned to St. Petersburg College to begin my full time position with the college. During this stage of my teaching career I had been involved in revitalizing the role of the science student. Students in the Natural Science department became involved in numerous exciting and stimulating experiences in various aspects of science. In the Earth Science and Geology classes that I have been teaching, we have been engaging students in numerous activities including fossil hunting trips, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and various beach activities. If you want to learn more about our activities that are open to SPC students please contact the Science Adventures Club through student life.
