Melita Prins
A native of Montreal, I grew up in a bilingual home, French speaking mother and an English father. I spent most of my early years in Canada, but also had the opportunity to live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for 4 years, and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 1 year. After getting married, I lived in a number of locations in Canada and finally relocated to Arizona in 2000. While raising my two boys, I worked in the technology and healthcare fields for more than ten years.
I started my undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University (ASU) with a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Master of Arts in French Literature. While doing my graduate studies at ASU I taught lower division French for two years while completing my M.A. I continue to teach at ASU and have taught a number of lower and upper division courses over the last 10 years. My interest in helping students to be successful in the classroom and their educational pursuits, I decided to pursue and received my M.S. in Academic Advising from Kansas State University in May 2015.
I began teaching French online at St. Petersburg College in 2013 while having relocated to Tampa from 2012-2014. In 2014 I returned to Phoenix where I worked as a high school guidance counselor at Xavier College Preparatory as well as starting the AP Capstone Program in 2016-2017. I taught both AP Seminar and AP Research at Xavier, while still being a full time guidance counselor. In 2019 I moved back to the Tampa Bay area and started to teach face-2-face classes at SPC. I am also an adjunct at the University of Tampa teaching French to undergraduates.
I am passionate about language and culture and my hope is to inspire students to perhaps continue to learn French even after the language requirements have been met.
An avid runner and swimmer, I have competed in many triathlons and half-marathons as well as completing 5 marathons.
