I am a 5th generation Floridian born and raised in Tampa. I grew up using sign language because my father was deaf and my mother is an interpreter. I have had national interpreting certification for over 30 years and also have national American Sign Language teaching certification as well. Gallaudet University is where my first degree in interpreting was obtained. I later earned an additional interpreting degree from the University of South Florida specializing in educational interpreting. My master's degree is in elementary Deaf education from McDaniel College in Maryland, specializing in second language acquisition and language development. It was the only program approved by the Council on Education for the Deaf, in the bilingual, bicultural approach at that time. My experience in interpreting covers the whole gamut of life situations. My teaching philosophy is to create a supportive, student-centered environment where students can experience and collaborate communicating with the exciting language of signs. I enjoy most Florida outdoor activities, especially sailing, skiing and diving. Salsa, jitterbug and two-step keep me going at night when I am not enjoying the arts. My church and community give me the opportunity to share with humanity the blessings given to me.
