TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
Dr. Caraway has a teaching philosophy that aims to help individuals reach their personal learning objective(s). Required is that her students be exposed to various hands-on and/or ‘life application’ skills. This newly gained knowledge allows her students to use their knowledge within future classes and/or workplaces. This talented educator has teaching experiences that are inclusive of grade levels ranging from Pre-K through 20 (college). Truly, she gains tremendous joy from watching her students master at their critical thinking abilities; apply newly learned research skills; and to establish more in-depth understanding about the different subject areas that she teaches them. Such extensive student interaction enhances her ability to easily engage these diverse student populations into exploring more insightful subject matters. The final result is that her students later find their learning experiences to be both life-changing and beneficial for a lifetime. Overall, her teaching philosophy for college students is seven-fold and inclusive of the following outcomes:
-
promoting learners to acquire enhanced knowledge
-
encouraging learners to further investigate various topics of interest
-
promoting learners to become lifelong readers
-
enhancing learners to become lifelong researchers
-
eradicating from learners the fear of new areas of learning
-
developing in learners the resilience to be critical thinkers
-
increasing in learners their level of self-confidence as lifelong learners
The outcomes of her learning objectives are established via a wide variety of applicable learning strategies, principles, and applied theories. Of course, by using various hands-on experiences with students it tends to promote the enhancement of their critical thinking skills. Furthermore, the use of lesson plans, identified learning objectives, pre-determined learning outcomes, and incorporating multiple learning theories are all essential to learners. For example, action learning and cognitive learning are both supportive of behavioral theories that influences student learning. In conclusion, as a strong enthusiast of the mentoring concept, she feels privileged about the ongoing opportunity to both teach and mentor hundreds of students annually.
