Hello everyone. My name is Professor Mayo. I teach American National Government and International Relations for St. Petersburg College - both online and face-to-face on campus in the classroom. Born on Long Island (New York), I have lived in sunny St. Petersburg since 1980. I enjoy the beach, playing tennis and running.
I graduated from St. Petersburg High School, then earned my Associate of Arts degree from what was then called St. Petersburg Junior College. In 1994, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology (with a minor in Political Science) from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg.
In 2004, I earned my Master of Arts degree in Political Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The title of my thesis was: "The Relationship Between an Incumbent Governor’s Popularity and State Legislative Election Outcomes: A Contemporary Assessment of the Coattails Phenomenon".
From 1994 to 1998, I served as a Legislative Assistant to then-Florida Senator Charlie Crist, Florida's former Governor. After that interesting endeavor - which was good training in government and political affairs - I spent some time in the private sector working as a Marketing and Communications Coordinator for a small software development firm based in St. Petersburg (during the height of the "Tech Boom").
In February 2000, I went to work as Government Affairs Director for a large profession trade association located in Pinellas County. Essentially, I directed all of the organization's government and political affairs.
In March 2003, I went to work for the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections office as a Deputy Administration.
Starting in June 2006, I became an independent contractor, providing public affairs and communications services to select organizations and political candidates in Florida.
I have been teaching for St. Petersburg College since 2004, and absolutely love it. Teaching is not only a noble profession, but one of the highest forms of public service. Teaching for SPC has also been one of the most fun and rewarding experiences of my life.
Please feel free to contact me at Mayo.Mike@spcollege.edu.
