View the college-wide attendance policy included in the How to be a Successful Student (Syllabus Addendum).
The policy notes that each instructor is to exercise professional judgment and define “active participation” in class (and therefore “attendance”), and publish that definition in each syllabus.
For this class, attendance is defined as:
It is expected for students to check messages in MyCourses at least twice a week as well as keep up with the due dates assigned in MyMathLab. Inactivity checks will generally be run weekly.
In order to be counted as present for Week 1 students must complete:
In order to be counted as present for Week 2 students must complete:
In order to be counted as preset for the 60% mark students must complete"
Grades are determined by the scores earned on Homework, Quizzes, Tests and the Final Exam. Final grades will be determined by the following weights:
Homework: 10% of final grade
Quizzes: 15% of final grade
Tests: 34% of final grade (~8.5% for each of 4 tests) Partial Credit is available for test work submitted to the dropbox
Discussion Posts: 8%
Final Exam: 33% of final grade
Tests are all given in MyMathLab which is strict about correct and incorrect answers. You are encouraged to write out your work during the test, scan your work and submit it to the "Test Work" dropbox. I will look over questions marked wrong and determine if any partial credit is owed. If I find a simple mistake (such as a sign mistake or addition mistake) I will note this and let you know. You may not get full credit, but half credit is better than no credit.
The Discussion Posts are in MyCourses and are due on Thursdays according to the calendar. You will be required to Post First before you can see any other posts. No need to respond to a classmates post, but you may if you want. You are expected to give some thought to these topics. There are no wrong answers, but it is good to check out what other classmates have posted.
Grades will be transferred from MyMathLab to MyCourses weekly. Your official grade will be what MyCourses shows.
The Proctored Final Exam is given at any of the SPC campuses. If you plan to take the exam elsewhere, you must go through ecampus to schedule this. Remote exams will be allowed using Examity.
Grading Scale:
A | 90 - 100% |
B | 80 - 89% |
C | 70 - 79% |
D | 60 - 69% |
F | Less than 60% |
Each Module constitutes one Chapter from our textbook. Assignments and due dates will be in MyMathLab.
You will be required to post an introduction to the class. Also there are Discussion postings available. You will receive weekly updates from your instructor. If questions come up, you are encouraged to contact the instructor. Messages are usually responded to within 24 hours, and most times it's much sooner. Please do everything you can to not fall behind in this class. We are on a rather strict schedule and it is very difficult to catch up.
SPC has outlined expectations for student behavior and interaction for online discussions, email, and other forms of communication. View the Student Expectations in the How to be a Successful Student (Syllabus Addendum).

Students should know how to navigate the course and use the course tools. Dropbox-style assignments may require attachments in either Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or Rich Text Format (.rtf), so that they can be properly evaluated. If an attachment cannot be opened by the instructor, students will be required to re-format and re-submit an assignment so that it can be evaluated and returned with feedback.
Minimum Technical Skills: Students should be able to successfully navigate in MyCourses and MyMathLab. If you need help with MyCourses, tutorials are available and are located at the beginning of the course. If you need help with MyMathLab please check the MyMathLab User Guide produced by Pearson.

The St. Petersburg College website at www.spcollege.edu is the official source of college information regarding the status of the institution. Other important information will be communicated via SPC Alert, local media outlets, and the college toll-free phone number 866-822-3978. All decisions concerning the discontinuation of college functions, cancellation of classes, or cessation of operations rest with the President or his/her designee. The College realizes that it is possible for a significant natural disaster to compromise SPC campus facilities sufficiently to disrupt the delivery of classes on campus/campuses for an extended period of time, and is planning ways our operations can continue following such an emergency.
So, in the event that a hurricane or other natural disaster causes significant damage to St. Petersburg College facilities, you may be provided the opportunity to complete your course work online. Following the event, please visit the college website for an announcement of the College's plan to resume operations.
Further, in the event of such a disaster, the instructor will continue using the Learning Management System (LMS) of MyCourses for continuation of all required learning and instructional activities in this course, including the issuing of graded online assignments and expectation of student completion of those graded assignments.
Therefore, in order to keep up with all activities in this course during and after a natural disaster, please plan to continue this course by maintaining online access to MyCourses in lieu of meeting in a classroom—possibly through duration of the course’s regularly scheduled end date. We will finish this course in MyCourses, as directed by your instructor online, and your instructor will use all graded assignments—both online and formerly on-campus—to assess and issue your final letter grade for this course, as normally planned, despite occurrence of the natural disaster.
